49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Injured in Car Crash

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car crash on July 14, sustaining several injuries that will restrict his participation as the team's training camp gets underway. The coach suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and a severe concussion, also requiring over 40 stitches to his face following the collision with an SUV near his Northern California home. He was treated at a local hospital and is now recuperating at home.

The 49ers organization has confirmed that Shanahan's injuries are not life-threatening and that he will engage in team activities on a limited basis during the initial period of training camp. Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster, along with team coordinators, will take on the primary head coaching responsibilities in the interim. Investigations into the accident determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, and the other driver did not sustain any injuries.

While there is currently no definitive timeline for his complete return due to his ongoing concussion recovery, General Manager John Lynch expects Shanahan to be ready to coach for the 49ers' Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on September 10. Shanahan will continue to follow concussion protocols until doctors fully clear him for all coaching duties.
