Sir Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, has issued a stark warning that the UK has entered a "new era of national security," characterized by complex and escalating threats from artificial intelligence, Russia, and Iran. During his annual threat update, McCallum highlighted that MI5 is now dedicating more resources to countering state threats than it did during the Cold War, noting a quadrupling of such cases over the last decade. He emphasized the need for a "whole-of-society effort" to protect critical infrastructure like banking, flights, and healthcare from potential cyber-attacks and sabotage.

Russia was identified by McCallum as "aggressor number one," actively engaging in hybrid warfare tactics that fall short of conventional conflict, such as attempted drone attacks and cyber-attacks on European infrastructure. Iran is also expanding its "hybrid campaign" against the UK, with over 50 arrests in the past year linked to Iranian-backed operations, some targeting Jewish communities and increasingly, military sites.

Furthermore, the MI5 chief expressed significant concern about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, stating that it is "supercharging" existing threats and introducing new risks. He warned that terrorists are already attempting to exploit AI for improved reconnaissance and attack methodologies, including the use of AI-enabled drones. McCallum's greatest worry is the potential for AI to facilitate the development of new bioweapons by extremist groups, underscoring the urgency for the UK to maintain a technological edge in intelligence to counter these emerging dangers.
