Man who killed Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman sentenced to life in prison

Vance Boelter was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years in federal prison on July 23, 2026, for the politically motivated murders of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Boelter pleaded guilty in June 2026 to federal charges, which allowed him to avoid the death penalty in exchange for the maximum possible sentence without parole. The violent attacks, which occurred on June 14, 2025, also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, seriously injured.

During the sentencing, the court heard powerful victim impact statements from the Hortmans' children and the Hoffmans, who recounted the profound trauma and lasting physical and emotional scars inflicted by Boelter's actions.
