Officer among three dead in Montreal shooting targeting police

A tragic shooting incident unfolded in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on June 22, 2026, resulting in the deaths of three individuals: a police officer, a civilian, and the suspect. Police identified the fallen officer as 34-year-old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who had joined the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) in 2021. The civilian victim was named Michael Moshe Mizrahi.

The event began when police responded to a 911 call reporting an individual brandishing a long gun from a Hilton hotel window. Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with gunfire. A second police officer sustained critical injuries but has since been reported in stable condition. Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described the day as a "nightmare." This incident tragically marks the first Montreal police line-of-duty death in 24 years. While initial concerns arose about potential ties to anti-Semitic attacks due to the area's Jewish population, reports later suggested the shooter was linked to incel subculture, with a manifesto targeting women discovered.
