A devastating explosion rocked Kaungtup village in Namhkam township, northeastern Myanmar, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, resulting in the deaths of over 45 people and injuring approximately 70 others. Among the confirmed fatalities were at least six children. The blast, which occurred around noon, is believed to have originated from a building used to store explosives for mining operations.

The area where the explosion took place is located about 3 kilometers south of the Chinese border and is under the control of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group. Initial investigations suggest that large quantities of mining explosives, specifically gelignite, were stored at the site. The TNLA has stated it is investigating the cause and will hold anyone responsible accountable.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the powerful blast severely damaged over 100 nearby houses. Rescue operations were initiated promptly, with 46 bodies recovered and taken for cremation, and many injured transported to the township hospital. Authorities are reportedly providing relief, medical care, and resettlement assistance to the affected residents.
