NASA recruits for Moon/Mars simulation as 'Earth's Black Box' records catastrophe

NASA is actively recruiting volunteers for a comprehensive year-long simulation designed to replicate the challenging conditions of future human missions to the Moon and Mars. This initiative, dubbed the Moon and Mars Exploration Analog, is scheduled to commence no earlier than August 2027 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Participants will reside and work in two distinct, confined habitats, which will simulate both the journey through deep space and planetary surface operations, including mock spacewalks and rover excursions.

The primary objective of this groundbreaking research is to gather crucial data on how crews adapt to extended periods of isolation, resource constraints, and the demands of deep-space missions while remaining on Earth. The simulation integrates elements from NASA's previous Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) and Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) programs. Insights gained will be vital for developing hardware, technologies, and protocols to ensure astronaut safety and readiness for upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon and the eventual first crewed journey to Mars.
