NATO fighter jet shoots down drone breaching Romania’s airspace amid regional tensions

A NATO fighter jet successfully intercepted and shot down a drone that breached Romanian national airspace early on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that a Spanish F-18 operating under a NATO air policing mission engaged the unmanned aircraft at approximately 5:01 AM. This incident marks the fourth drone downed by Romania this year, as the country continues to face repeated airspace violations amid ongoing regional tensions related to Russian strikes in neighboring Ukraine.

The drone was detected entering Romanian territory from Moldova, approximately 24 kilometers north of the city of Galati. Fragments from the downed aircraft are believed to have fallen in an uninhabited area between two villages, and no injuries or property damage were reported. While the drone's origin was not immediately specified by the ministry, previous incursions have been linked to the conflict in Ukraine.

This event underscores a persistent challenge for NATO member Romania, which shares a 614-kilometer border with Ukraine and has experienced numerous drone-related incidents. Just last month, Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down three Russian drones, and authorities have also dealt with drifting mines in the Black Sea, all contributing to heightened security concerns in the region.
