Nepal PM Demands Climate Justice at UN, Calls Flood a 'Warning to the World'

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah recently addressed the United Nations General Assembly, strongly asserting that a devastating flood in August 2026 served as a dire "warning to the world" regarding climate change. During his speech, Shah admonished global leaders for climate inaction, highlighting that Nepal, a nation contributing minimally to greenhouse gas emissions, is disproportionately suffering the consequences. The catastrophic event, which was linked by scientists to melting permafrost and glacier instability caused by climate change, resulted in at least 1,400 deaths and thousands more missing.

Prime Minister Shah underscored that the disaster was not merely a local tragedy but a stark reminder that climate change disregards national borders. He stressed that the international community's support for Nepal's recovery, estimated to be around 10% of its GDP, should be viewed as compensation for climate injustice rather than charitable aid. Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal echoed this sentiment, calling for a global effort and emphasizing that the situation is a matter of fairness and justice.

Shah further proposed the establishment of a "Himalaya Climate Resilience Mechanism," advocating for enhanced cooperation among Nepal, India, and China to share crucial satellite data, monitor glacial lakes, and bolster early-warning systems against future climate-induced disasters. This initiative aims to address the escalating climate risks in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, which is experiencing destabilization from a warming climate.
