Over 1,000 missing, 160+ killed in deadly flash floods on Nepal-China border

A catastrophic flash flood, triggered by a glacial collapse, devastated villages along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The sudden torrent of mud and debris, initially mistaken for an earthquake's seismic activity, swept through communities, destroying infrastructure and halting travel. Nepali authorities reported at least 157-162 fatalities, while China confirmed three deaths in its Gyirong County in Tibet, bringing the combined death toll to over 160.

The disaster has left thousands missing across the mountainous region, popular with trekkers and pilgrims. Nepal's tourism board indicated that hundreds of foreign nationals, including between 33 and 47 US citizens, are among the unaccounted. Rescue operations are currently underway amidst challenging conditions, with efforts hampered by damaged roads and disrupted communications.

Reports describe the flood as an "inland tsunami," with videos showing a massive wall of water and mud engulfing buildings and vehicles. The affected areas in Nepal include the Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Dhading districts, which experienced significant destruction of houses, roads, and hydropower projects.
