New Jersey error allowed almost 400 non-citizens to register and vote

A software error within the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) system led to the improper registration of approximately 6,600 non-citizens to vote. The error occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, despite these individuals indicating they were not U.S. citizens when applying for driver's licenses or identification cards.

Governor Mikie Sherrill announced the issue, noting that the problem originated nearly three years before her term began in January 2026. A preliminary analysis indicates that fewer than 400 of those erroneously registered actually cast ballots across the state, with these voters registered as Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated.

In response, Governor Sherrill has initiated an investigation into the matter, ordered the removal of all mistakenly added voters from the rolls, and begun the process of replacing the system's vendor.
