World-renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The fatal incident occurred on Thursday, July 30, 2026, sweeping away an expedition team he was leading. His company, Elite Expeditions, officially announced his tragic passing on Saturday, August 1, expressing profound sadness and confirming that other members of the expedition also did not survive the avalanche. The Alpine Club of Pakistan and various international news outlets have also corroborated the reports of his death and the ongoing recovery efforts.

Purja, a 43-year-old British-Nepali climber, was celebrated globally for his extraordinary achievements in mountaineering, most notably his "Project Possible" in 2019, where he summitted all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in a record-breaking six months and six days. A former Gurkha and UK Special Boat Service (SBS) soldier, he continued to push boundaries, including leading the first winter ascent of K2 and recently setting new records for oxygenless ascents. His accomplishments were famously documented in the Netflix film "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible".

Rescue operations have been challenging due to harsh weather and difficult terrain on Broad Peak, the world's 12th-highest mountain.
