Fast-moving wildfires devastate Spokane and double in size in British Columbia

Fast-moving wildfires are causing widespread devastation across North America, leading to mass evacuations in both British Columbia, Canada, and Spokane, Washington, in the United States. In British Columbia, the Bald Range wildfire has rapidly intensified, doubling in size to approximately 95 square kilometers and prompting a state of emergency in the District of Summerland. Over 20,000 residents in Summerland and Peachland have been ordered to evacuate their homes due to the aggressive and fast-spreading blaze, which is also impacting major transportation routes like Highway 97.

Meanwhile, the Spokane area of Washington state is battling a complex of three significant wildfires—the Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires—all of which ignited on August 1, 2026, with some attributed to arson. These fires, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, quickly spread into residential areas, forcing the evacuation of over 65,000 people and destroying an estimated 846 structures.

While firefighters have achieved partial containment on the Spokane fires amidst periods of cooler weather, critical fire conditions are anticipated to return. Both regions are experiencing a particularly destructive wildfire season, with ongoing efforts to contain the blazes and support displaced communities.
