Barack and Michelle Obama open presidential center to public, celebrate Juneteenth

The Obama Presidential Center officially opened its doors to the public on June 19, 2026, coinciding with Juneteenth celebrations in Chicago. The opening followed a dedication ceremony on June 18, during which both former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered emotional speeches. Located on the South Side of Chicago, the sprawling nearly 20-acre campus is designed to be a hub for civic engagement and a testament to American democracy. It features a museum with a replica of the Oval Office, a Chicago Public Library branch, gardens, a basketball court, and various community spaces aimed at inspiring visitors to effect change in their own communities. The opening on Juneteenth symbolically merged the celebration of emancipation with a new monument honoring the nation's first Black president and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
