Major Hurricane Genevieve roars in Pacific as Hurricane Fausto nears Hawaii

Two powerful hurricanes are actively churning in the Pacific Ocean today, July 27, 2026. Major Hurricane Genevieve has intensified into a Category 5 storm, becoming the first of its kind in the Eastern Pacific in two years, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph). While Genevieve is expected to remain far from land, tracking northwest parallel to the Mexican coast, its significant swells are already generating dangerous surf and rip current conditions along Mexico's southwestern shores and the Baja California peninsula. Forecasters anticipate some fluctuations in its intensity before a gradual weakening later in the week.

Further to the northwest, Hurricane Fausto is approaching the Hawaiian Islands as a Category 1 hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph). Fausto is currently situated approximately 580 miles (935 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, moving west-northwest. Although the storm is predicted to weaken to a tropical storm and pass just north of the islands, residents are advised to closely monitor its progression. East-facing shores of Hawaii are already experiencing increasing large surf and strong currents due to Fausto, creating hazardous conditions.
