Russian missile likely detonated in Poland, Polish PM says; NATO jets scramble

A suspected Russian missile detonated in eastern Poland yesterday, July 30, 2026, creating a substantial 10-meter-wide crater and prompting NATO jets to scramble. The incident occurred in a field near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, approximately 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, amidst a large-scale Russian missile assault on neighboring Ukraine. The Polish military detected an unidentified object entering its airspace around 3:40 a.m. local time and scrambled F-16 fighter jets to intercept it. However, the object, which disappeared from radar six minutes later, subsequently crashed, leaving a five-meter-deep impact site.

NATO confirmed the airspace violation was a Russian missile, reiterating its commitment to defending allied territory. This event has heightened concerns about the potential for the conflict in Ukraine to spill over into NATO member states, as similar incursions have occurred previously.
