Ratko Mladić, 'Butcher of Bosnia' Convicted of Genocide, Dies

Ratko Mladić, notoriously known as the "Butcher of Bosnia" for his central role in the 1990s Bosnian War, died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 84, while serving a life sentence in The Hague. Mladić, a former Bosnian Serb general, was convicted of genocide for orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which at least 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed, marking the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. He was also found guilty of various other war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the brutal siege of Sarajevo.

Mladić's conviction by the United Nations' International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2017 brought a measure of justice to the victims of the devastating conflict. His final appeal against his life sentence was rejected in June 2021. He had been in ill health, suffering a series of strokes, and passed away in a hospital in The Hague.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals confirmed Mladić's death and ordered a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding it. His passing closes a significant chapter in the pursuit of accountability for the atrocities committed during the Bosnian War.
