RFK Jr. suggests measles deaths 'fabricated' as new documents refute Samoa trip claims

Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is currently facing renewed scrutiny on multiple fronts concerning his public health stances. Recently, as the U.S. Health Secretary, Kennedy suggested that two measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania may have been "fabricated" or prematurely announced, while also spreading debunked claims about the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Pennsylvania health officials, including the state's Health Secretary and Governor, have strongly refuted these assertions, confirming the deaths of two unvaccinated individuals in Lancaster County who tested positive for measles.

Adding to the controversy, newly revealed documents appear to contradict Kennedy's past statements regarding a 2019 trip to Samoa. During his 2025 Senate confirmation hearings for Health Secretary, Kennedy repeatedly testified that the visit "had nothing to do with vaccines". However, a letter sent by Kennedy to the Samoan prime minister prior to his trip explicitly outlined his intention to study the MMR vaccine and investigate potential manufacturing issues following the deaths of two children.

This contradiction has prompted calls for a criminal investigation from groups like American Oversight, alleging that Kennedy may have made false statements to Congress. Critics, including Samoan health officials, have previously linked Kennedy's visit to the bolstering of anti-vaccine sentiment, which they believe exacerbated a deadly measles outbreak in Samoa that later claimed 83 lives, predominantly young children.
