Russia says UK ‘playing with fire’ amid reports CIA chief has warned Kremlin not to attack Nato

Russia has issued a stern warning to the United Kingdom, stating it is "playing with fire" by supplying Ukraine with missile technology and threatening to target British military sites both within Ukraine and elsewhere. This escalation follows the UK's recent announcement that it would share classified technical blueprints for British-made components of Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles, enabling Ukraine to produce its own long-range weapons. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova asserted that London and Paris, which has also licensed the technology, would bear "direct responsibility" for any Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory carried out with these weapons.

Concurrently, reports indicate that CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted an unannounced visit to Moscow on August 25, 2026, to caution the Kremlin against initiating an attack on any NATO member states. The warning reportedly emphasized the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, amid U.S. intelligence concerns that Russia might attempt to test NATO's collective defense with a limited incursion or cyberattack.

While the Kremlin confirmed Ratcliffe's visit, spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that President Vladimir Putin did not meet with the CIA director, with interactions occurring at the intelligence services level. Peskov dismissed media reports concerning Russia's intent to attack NATO as "scare-story material" unrelated to Moscow's actual plans.
