Huge Russian strikes on Kyiv leave 16 dead as drones hit Romanian and Moldovan territory

A large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv has resulted in at least 16 fatalities across the city and its surrounding region. The extensive overnight aerial assault, which included both missiles and drones, caused widespread damage and prompted hours of air raid warnings. Emergency services reported 15 deaths within the capital, with an additional fatality in the broader Kyiv area. Approximately 40 individuals sustained injuries in the barrage.

The attack, which occurred on August 20, 2026, saw multiple residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure damaged or destroyed. Ukrainian officials noted that Russia has intensified its use of ballistic missiles against Kyiv in recent months, taking advantage of Ukraine's dwindling supply of Patriot air defense interceptors, which are crucial for countering such advanced weaponry.

Beyond Kyiv, Russian drones also reportedly impacted neighboring territories. Moldova's Ministry of Defense confirmed that a Russian Shahed-136 strike drone briefly entered Moldovan airspace before returning to Ukraine during the overnight attacks. Simultaneously, Romania's defense ministry reported that a Russian drone crashed onto its territory in an uninhabited area near the Ukrainian border. Additionally, a border checkpoint in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast, along the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, was struck by Russian drones.
