A tragic incident in Niger's Sahara Desert has resulted in the deaths of 49 individuals who succumbed to thirst after their truck broke down in a remote area. The group, all Nigerien nationals, was reportedly returning from a Muslim festival in Mali when their vehicle became stranded over 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Assamaka, a key border crossing near Mali and Algeria, around June 4-5, 2026.
Deprived of water and unable to repair the truck in the hostile desert environment with extreme temperatures and no supply points, the travelers faced insurmountable odds. Only two survivors managed to trek more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) to a water source and then to Assamaka, where they alerted authorities to the disaster. The victims were subsequently buried in mass graves at the site of the breakdown.
