Serbian President announces resignation amid widespread student-led protests

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced his intention to resign within weeks, setting the stage for early presidential and parliamentary elections. This development follows a year and a half of sustained anti-government demonstrations, prominently led by students, who have been vocal in their demands for accountability and political change across the country.

The widespread protests initially ignited after a deadly railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad in November 2024, which claimed 16 lives. Student activists and opposition groups have consistently linked the tragedy to alleged government mismanagement and corruption, fueling calls for snap general elections and an end to perceived authoritarian rule.

While Vucic's resignation is anticipated, his long-term political future remains a subject of speculation.
