US singer D4vd to stand trial for murder as Ecuador battles drug gangs and US crime rises

US singer David Anthony Burke, known as D4vd, has been ordered to stand trial for the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge made the ruling on July 27, 2026, following a five-day preliminary hearing. Burke faces charges including murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains, with prosecutors alleging special circumstances such as murder of a witness and for financial gain. Prosecutors contend that D4vd killed Hernandez after she threatened to expose their alleged illicit sexual relationship, which they claim would have jeopardized his burgeoning music career just before his debut album's release. The victim's decomposed and dismembered body was discovered in the front trunk of Burke's car in September 2025, and text messages presented in court reportedly show Hernandez threatening to ruin his career shortly before her death in April 2025. Burke has pleaded not guilty, with his defense arguing that while concealment of death occurred, there is no evidence of his intent to kill.

Meanwhile, Ecuador continues to grapple with severe drug gang violence, transforming parts of the country into some of the most dangerous areas. President Daniel Noboa has responded by imposing states of emergency and initiating military offensives, often with logistical support from the United States. The nation experienced over 3,600 fatalities from gang violence in the first 11 months of 2025, marking a 42% increase from the previous year, and over 70% of the population was exposed to organized crime violence in 2025. Gangs, whose operations often originate in prisons, are intensely vying for control over illicit activities including drug trafficking, illegal gold mining, extortion, and kidnappings.

In the United States, crime rates in major cities have largely continued their decline in the first half of 2026, extending a multi-year trend that followed a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic. The average reported homicide rate saw an 18% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, potentially leading to the lowest national murder rate in over a century by year-end. Significant drops were also noted in carjackings and other violent crimes. However, drug offenses experienced a 12% rise in the first half of 2026, though still below pre-pandemic levels, while domestic violence incidents increased by 8% and sexual assaults by 3%.
