Spain has implemented temporary border controls on travelers arriving from Italy, marking an escalation in an ongoing migration dispute between the two European Union member states. The Spanish measures, which began at midnight on Friday, August 7, 2026, and are scheduled to last until September 7, follow Italy's earlier imposition of its own restrictions on arrivals from Spain. These reciprocal controls involve passport, nationality, and visa checks for passengers arriving by air and sea from Italy, although Spanish citizens are generally exempt, with the focus primarily on non-EU residents.

Italy initially justified its border checks by citing a recent mass influx of approximately 72,000 migrants into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta in late July. Rome argued these controls were necessary to mitigate security and terrorism risks and prevent onward migration into Italy. However, Spain's government dismissed Italy's reasoning as "spurious arguments," contending that migrants in Ceuta lack a physical route to the wider Schengen area and that Italy's actions were "unfair, contrary to the EU's interests and discriminatory."

The disagreement has exposed underlying tensions between the socialist government of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the conservative administration of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who advocates for stricter EU migration policies.
