Spokane wildfire arson suspect waited for dry, windy day to start blaze, police say

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the largest of three wildfires devastating the Spokane, Washington, area. Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, was taken into custody on Monday, August 3, 2026, and faces charges of first-degree arson for allegedly starting the Old Trails Fire. Police indicate Farinacci confessed to meticulously planning the blaze for weeks, deliberately waiting for a day with high winds, low humidity, and elevated temperatures to maximize the fire's spread. Authorities found waterproof matches and a butane lighter in his possession upon his arrest.

The Old Trails Fire, one of three significant blazes near Spokane, has resulted in the destruction of hundreds of structures and prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported in connection with the fires. Farinacci has also reportedly admitted to igniting numerous other fires in the region since July of last year. His bond was initially set at $1 million and subsequently increased to $2 million.
