Supreme Court backs Trump’s order to curb mail ballots

The Supreme Court has reinstated parts of an executive order by President Donald Trump aimed at restricting mail-in ballots, overturning a lower court's block on the directive. In a 6-3 decision, the high court determined that a coalition of states challenging the order had filed their lawsuit prematurely, as the executive order had not yet inflicted direct harm, thus lacking the grounds for an injunction. This ruling allows the Trump administration to proceed with certain aspects of its plan ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

President Trump's executive order, issued in March, mandates that the Department of Homeland Security compile lists of eligible voters for each state and requires the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail ballots exclusively to individuals on these verified lists. The order also includes provisions for new, trackable ballot envelope designs that states would need to implement. Critics, including the dissenting liberal justices, have warned that the decision could introduce confusion and uncertainty into the election process.

While the Supreme Court's ruling permits some elements of the order to advance, it did not address the constitutionality or legality of the executive order itself. Further legal challenges remain, with a separate nationwide injunction against other parts of the order still in effect, suggesting the legal battle over mail-in voting changes is not yet concluded.
