Police hunt suspects after multiple mass shootings leave over 30 dead in South Africa

South African police have launched an intensive manhunt for suspects following a series of mass shootings across the country that left more than 30 people dead over the weekend of September 26-27, 2026. The violence unfolded in three separate incidents, prompting widespread concern over the nation's persistent struggle with violent crime.

The deadliest attack occurred in the Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, where eight unidentified gunmen opened fire at a tavern, killing 17 people and injuring 15 others. Separately, ten individuals were shot dead at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, a township near Cape Town. Another four people lost their lives in a shooting in Khayelitsha township, also in the Western Cape.

Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the shootings and are actively investigating potential motives, which some reports suggest could involve illegal mining turf wars or business disputes. The incidents highlight broader concerns regarding the prevalence of illegal firearms and organized crime within South Africa.
