Thailand tightens gun controls after deadly school shooting tragedy

Following a recent deadly school shooting, Thailand is implementing stricter gun control measures. The tragedy occurred on August 7, 2026, when a teenage gunman killed his grandparents before proceeding to Debsirin Nonthaburi School outside Bangkok, where he fatally shot at least five teachers and injured approximately 30 other individuals before taking his own life.

In response, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an immediate suspension of permits for gun purchases and a review of all existing licenses. Authorities are now directed to cease renewing permits for individuals to acquire firearms, and a new, more stringent gun control law is being drafted to include tougher penalties. The proposed legislation aims to restrict the carrying of firearms in public, limiting it primarily to government officials on duty.

Additional measures include requirements for legally registered firearms to be kept at home, restrictions on individuals under 20 years old from accessing shooting ranges, and plans to address the widespread issue of unregistered firearms. These actions come amidst growing concerns over Thailand's high rate of civilian gun ownership—the highest in Southeast Asia—and a history of mass shootings, including a 2022 attack at a childcare center in Nong Bua Lamphu.
