Trump Administration Pushes New Policies, Shifts Geopolitical Stances

The Trump administration has recently implemented several significant policy changes, notably establishing the U.S. Space Academy and moving to rename Lake Ontario. On August 28, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create the U.S. Space Academy at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, aiming to cultivate future leaders and strengthen the nation's space workforce for both NASA and the U.S. Space Force. Just days prior, on August 27 or 28, 2026, the President also signed an executive order officially renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," a move that Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, have publicly stated they will not recognize amidst ongoing trade tensions.

In terms of foreign policy, the administration has adjusted its approach to military aid and its strategy toward Iran. Since January 2025, there has been an increase in immediate military aid deliveries to Ukraine, alongside a new mechanism for NATO member states to provide weapons and procure U.S. replacements. While efforts have been made to review and reduce overall foreign aid, military assistance under the Department of Defense has remained largely unaffected, and the administration's budget proposals have sought substantial increases in military spending.

Regarding Iran, the Trump administration has shifted its strategy to emphasize sustained economic pressure and the degradation of Iran's nuclear, missile, and drone capabilities, as well as its proxy activities. This approach, described as a "grinding contest of attrition," seeks to weaken Tehran through economic means, with a renewed focus on sanctions rather than direct military confrontation, aiming to compel a change in the Iranian regime's behavior.
