Trump indicated that the change was being considered because the U.S. no longer expected to conduct significant business with Ontario. This move follows a breakdown in recent trade talks and the imposition of new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, with Canada preparing to implement its own retaliatory measures.

The proposal has been met with strong opposition from Canada. Canadian Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, affirmed that the lake would always be known as Lake Ontario and that Canada would defend its Great Lakes. Other Canadian officials, including Minister of U.S. Trade Dominic LeBlanc and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, dismissed Trump's remarks as rhetoric, with LeBlanc stating that Canada would not engage with social media posts from the U.S. administration. Many Canadians have reacted with a mix of disbelief and humor, while some Americans have also expressed embarrassment over the escalating rhetoric.

This is not the first time Trump has sought to rebrand geographical features; in 2025, he ordered federal agencies to use "Gulf of America" instead of the Gulf of Mexico. While the U.S. government has the authority to recognize such name changes domestically, it cannot compel Canada or international bodies to adopt the new nomenclature for the shared body of water.
