Former President Donald Trump has recently proposed renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," a suggestion that has ignited considerable backlash from Canada. This controversial idea emerges amidst an escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada, with the U.S. having imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods following a breakdown in trade negotiations. Trump's proposal was conveyed via social media, where he stated that serious consideration was being given to the name change, citing that the U.S. no longer expected to conduct significant business with Ontario.

Canadian officials and citizens have widely rejected the renaming concept, dismissing it as "rage bait" and "unnecessary rhetoric." Canada's Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, affirmed that the lake would "always" be called Lake Ontario, emphasizing pride in the Great Lakes as a foundational element of their country. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also dismissed the threat, calling for a return to negotiations despite trading personal insults with Trump. Experts note that while the U.S. government could adopt the name for federal use, it would not compel Canada or international bodies to recognize the change, and such unilateral actions could undermine crucial water diplomacy.

This proposal is not Trump's first attempt to rebrand a shared body of water; he previously signed an executive order in January 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," a change not recognized by Mexico or many international entities. The current trade tensions have led to Canada announcing retaliatory tariffs on American goods, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowing to respond "dollar for dollar" to U.S. levies, further deepening the economic conflict between the two long-standing allies.
