CNN Poll: Anger at Trump outpaces GOP loyalty to him heading into midterms

A recent CNN poll indicates that public anger directed at former President Donald Trump currently exceeds the loyalty he commands within the Republican Party as the 2026 midterm elections approach. This sentiment is a significant unifying factor for Democrats, with approximately seven out of ten Democratic-aligned voters intending to cast their ballots as a message of opposition to Trump. In contrast, only about 41% of Republican-aligned voters plan to vote as a show of support for him.

The survey also reveals a decline in Trump's approval, even among Republicans. While 56% of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters still believe Trump has positively influenced the party, this figure is down from 67% earlier this year. A notable divide exists within the GOP, with nearly half of non-MAGA Republicans expressing a desire for significant party changes, compared to a much smaller percentage of MAGA-aligned voters.

Overall, the poll suggests challenges for the Republican Party heading into the midterms, with Democrats currently holding an eight-point lead on the generic congressional ballot. A substantial majority of Americans also express concerns that former President Trump is not adequately focusing on the nation's most pressing issues.
