Commerce Secretary says Kennedy Center faces demolition if Trump’s name isn’t attached

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has stated that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts faces eventual demolition if President Donald Trump's name is not affixed to the institution, linking its structural integrity and financial future to Trump's involvement in proposed renovations. This assertion comes amidst a protracted legal dispute where Justice Department lawyers, representing the Kennedy Center, argued in court filings that the building is "structurally unsound, fundamentally unsafe, and embarrassing to the Nation's Capital," and faces "terminal decline" without Trump's real estate development experience and fundraising capabilities. They suggested the building could be replaced by a large outdoor amphitheater if renovations are blocked.

This controversial stance has been met with skepticism and strong opposition. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper previously ruled in May 2026 that only Congress has the authority to rename the Kennedy Center, ordering Trump's name to be removed after a prior attempt by the Trump-aligned board to rename it "The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts". Despite this, the board has since proposed new resolutions to inscribe Trump's name on the facade as "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" and to rename the grounds "President Donald J. Trump Plaza," which opponents characterize as an attempt to circumvent the judge's order.

Critics, including attorneys for Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member, have called the administration's arguments a "not-so-subtle threat" to demolish the iconic cultural landmark if the President's plans are not accepted. While Lutnick denied an immediate demolition threat, he maintained that the building's eventual fate is tied to Trump's commitment to renovations and fundraising efforts, which he believes are contingent on this recognition. The judge has questioned the urgency and legality of these renewed efforts to associate Trump's name with the center, emphasizing that his role is to determine compliance with federal law.
