Why the US president’s secret Air Force One switcheroo is problematic amid Iran threat

Former President Donald Trump reportedly executed a clandestine aircraft switch after a NATO summit in Turkey last month, departing on a smaller military plane due to a perceived assassination threat from Iran. While the White House publicly maintained that Trump was aboard the older Air Force One (VC-25A), he was secretly transferred via a catering truck to an Air Force C-32A aircraft on July 8, 2026. This covert operation was initiated after U.S. intelligence detected a credible plot by Iran or its proxies to target the presidential plane with a missile.

The incident has sparked significant concerns regarding the safeguards for the White House press pool. Journalists and some White House staff were unaware of the switch, believing they were traveling with the President on the decoy Air Force One. They were even instructed to keep window shades closed during departure. The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) has since pressed the administration for a clear protocol for handling extraordinary security situations to ensure the press pool's safety and ability to provide an independent account of the President's movements.

The secrecy surrounding the departure also brought into question the security of the newer, Qatari-gifted Boeing 747-8, which Trump had used to travel to the summit but reportedly lacked some of the advanced defensive capabilities of the older Air Force One. While such security maneuvers are rare, former Secret Service agents acknowledge they are not entirely unprecedented in situations involving credible threats to the President.
