Trump asks Supreme Court to allow ballroom construction, citing national security and architectural values

The Trump administration has formally petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the continuation of construction on a controversial $400 million ballroom project at the White House East Wing. This appeal follows a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which last week ordered a halt to the above-ground work, asserting that presidential authority alone is insufficient and congressional approval is required for such a significant undertaking. The appeals court had paused its own ruling for two weeks to give the administration time to escalate the legal challenge.

In its filing, the Solicitor General argued that suspending the construction, which is currently 65% complete, poses a threat to national security. The administration contends that the project, characterized as an "integrated military complex," includes a secure ballroom space, an underground bunker, and medical facilities deemed vital for the safety of the President, his family, and White House staff, especially given alleged recent threats.

The legal dispute originated from a lawsuit filed by historic preservationists, who maintained that the administration bypassed necessary reviews and lacked the unilateral authority to demolish and rebuild portions of the historic White House without explicit congressional authorization. The appeals court's decision largely sided with these preservationists, emphasizing that the president acts as a temporary tenant of the White House, not its owner.
