Trump Criticized for Comments on USS Lincoln Deployment and Military Action

Former President Donald Trump on Friday, August 14, 2026, dismissed concerns regarding the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, stating that its prolonged deployment of nearly nine months was "not nearly long enough." Speaking to reporters, Trump denied that families of service members harbored worries about the mental health and living situations of their relatives on the aircraft carrier. The USS Lincoln has been at sea for over 250 days, with more than 200 consecutive days without a port call, an unusually long period for a modern carrier, as it supports operations in the Middle East related to the war with Iran.

In contrast to Trump's assertions, families of the USS Lincoln's crew and several Democratic lawmakers have voiced serious concerns about deteriorating conditions on the ship. Reports have highlighted issues such as food shortages, water contamination, plumbing problems, and a decline in mental health among sailors. There have also been allegations of multiple suicide attempts and sailors going overboard, prompting calls for investigations into the welfare of the approximately 5,000 personnel aboard.

Despite these reports, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth contended that the descriptions of dire conditions had been "completely misrepresented." A Navy official additionally stated that the vessel maintained consistent access to clean water, functioning air conditioning, and healthy meals, and that no increase in suicidal ideation or attempts had been identified. The USS Abraham Lincoln is reportedly scheduled to be relieved in the region by the USS George Washington.
