Trump Signs Order to Limit Childhood Vaccines and Split MMR Shots

Former President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at significantly altering national guidance on childhood vaccinations. The directive, issued on August 10, 2026, seeks to reduce the number of routinely recommended childhood vaccines and reorganize the national immunization schedule. This move comes as part of an effort to realign U.S. practices with what the administration describes as "best practices" from other developed nations, acknowledging a scientific assessment from the Department of Health and Human Services.

A key provision of the executive order recommends administering the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine as three separate, single-disease injections, contingent on such products becoming domestically available. Additionally, the order advises that, where feasible, all childhood immunizations should be given at separate medical visits, rather than grouped together. The administration's plan also suggests moving certain vaccines, such as those for influenza, COVID-19, and hepatitis A and B, from universal recommendations to decisions made through shared consultations between parents and medical professionals.

While federal immunization recommendations are advisory and states retain authority over school vaccine requirements, the order provides a presidential endorsement for greater flexibility in vaccine timing and administration. Public health experts have expressed concerns that spacing out vaccinations could potentially increase children's vulnerability to preventable diseases for longer periods. Currently, standalone measles, mumps, or rubella vaccines are not commercially available in the United States.
