Trump's shift on South Korea alliance draws fury, prompts calls for military independence

Former President Donald Trump has ordered a significant reduction in joint military exercises with South Korea, a decision made just hours before the "Ulchi Freedom Shield" drills were set to commence. Trump justified the move by citing the high costs of the exercises and stating that they send an "inappropriate and hostile" signal to North Korea, with whom he maintains a "very good relationship". He also reportedly linked the scale-back to South Korea's refusal to assist the United States in a military operation concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

This abrupt change has sparked strong criticism and concern among allies. In response, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the need for enhanced "independent military capabilities". He reiterated the nation's commitment to expediting the transfer of wartime operational control (Opcon) of its forces from the U.S. and called for accelerated development of South Korea's nuclear-powered submarine program.

Lawmakers and analysts have expressed alarm over Trump's decision, describing it as "inane" and "shortsighted". Critics suggest the move could undermine U.S. reliability among its Indo-Pacific allies and potentially strengthen adversaries.
