UK defence chief warns of operational cuts without increased military funding

The UK's Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, has issued a stark warning that British armed forces face significant operational cutbacks and reduced military activities without a substantial increase in government funding. Testifying before a Lords committee, Knighton expressed particular concern over the budget allocated for day-to-day operations, known as the Resource Departmental Expenditure Limit (RDEL), which he stated is crucial for exercises and ongoing military commitments.

This caution comes amidst a broader controversy surrounding the UK's long-delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP), which reportedly has a multi-billion-pound funding shortfall. The issue has recently led to the resignations of former Defence Secretary John Healey and Armed Forces Minister Al Carns, both of whom publicly criticized the proposed defence spending as insufficient to meet current and future global threats.

Without additional financial support, Sir Richard indicated that the armed forces would be compelled to scale back training, limit operational deployments, and potentially delay the acquisition of new equipment. This could impact Britain's ability to maintain its international presence and respond effectively to evolving security challenges across regions like Europe, Ukraine, and the Middle East.
