The incident, occurring less than a month into Burnham's premiership, involved only a limited number of messages that were reportedly not of significant content. Burnham eventually grew suspicious of the contact and ended the communication, with the matter subsequently reported to the appropriate authorities.

The impersonation prompted the British Embassy in Washington to alert the White House, raising questions about security protocols and potential vulnerabilities. This event follows previous reports of an impersonator accessing Susie Wiles' personal phone in May 2025 to solicit funds or presidential pardons from her contacts, which sparked an FBI investigation.

While Downing Street has declined to comment on the matter, citing national security concerns, the exchange highlights ongoing worries about cybersecurity and the manipulation of senior officials through impersonation attempts.
