Starmer backs Burnham amid speculation of future leadership role

Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, effective within weeks, following a period of declining public and party support. The leadership election for the Labour Party is set to open for nominations on July 9, closing a week later, with the new leader expected to be in place by September 1 if there is a contest. Burnham, a former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is currently the sole declared candidate, significantly boosting his prospects of becoming Prime Minister possibly by mid-July.
