UK ministers lobby Trump to avert backlash against social media ban for under-16s

The United Kingdom has recently announced plans to ban social media access for children under 16, with an anticipated implementation by spring 2027. This initiative, championed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, aims to shield young people from harmful content and addictive platform features by prohibiting access to services like Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X, though messaging applications such as WhatsApp will remain accessible.

In response to this impending ban, UK ministers are reportedly engaged in significant lobbying efforts with the Trump administration to avert any potential diplomatic backlash. The US government has, however, already expressed reservations, indicating a preference for more narrowly focused online safety measures rather than a broad prohibition, citing concerns over potential burdens on American technology companies.

Furthermore, the US administration has highlighted worries regarding free speech implications and the technical challenges of age verification. Critics, including Elon Musk, have publicly denounced the UK's proposal, with Musk labeling it a "censorship law." Despite these international objections, the UK government is moving forward with the legislation, underscoring its commitment to prioritizing child safety online.
