Ukraine sees highest civilian casualties since 2022; Laura Loomer shifts stance to support Ukraine

Ukraine has experienced its deadliest period for civilians since April 2022, with July 2026 recording the highest number of casualties. This month, at least 377 civilians have been killed and 2,129 injured due to ongoing conflict. This alarming trend follows a steady increase in casualties throughout 2026, with the first half of the year seeing 1,396 civilians killed and 7,978 injured, marking a 37% rise compared to the same period in 2025. The surge is largely attributed to Russia's intensified use of powerful weapons, including long-range missiles targeting urban centers and short-range drones near frontlines.

Amidst these rising casualties, prominent American conservative figure Laura Loomer has publicly reversed her long-held critical stance on the war in Ukraine. Previously known for spreading Russian propaganda and opposing U.S. aid to Ukraine, Loomer visited Kyiv in July 2026 and conducted an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During her visit, she stated that she had been "bamboozled by Russian propaganda" and expressed regret for her past claims.

Loomer's shift, which included praising Ukrainian military tactics and distancing herself from earlier anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, has been noted as significant due to her influence within the MAGA base and her close ties to former President Donald Trump. Her change of heart, seemingly endorsed by Trump himself through a shared clip of her interview with Zelenskyy, could potentially impact future discussions on U.S. support for Ukraine.
