Russia escalates threats against Ukraine, warns EU of destabilization amid ongoing conflict

Russia has recently intensified its threats against Ukraine, particularly warning of "systematic strikes" on Kyiv and urging foreign citizens and diplomats to evacuate the capital. These latest warnings follow a series of missile and drone attacks, including the reported use of an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, which Russian officials describe as capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Moscow's Foreign Ministry stated that these strikes are a response and will continue, explicitly targeting defense industry facilities, drone-related infrastructure, and "decision-making centers".

In response, the European Union and several member states, including Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, and Poland, have strongly condemned Russia's actions, summoning Russian envoys to convey their concerns. EU officials largely dismissed the threats as a "familiar Kremlin tactic" and "shameless blackmail," aimed at intimidating Europe and sowing panic, rather than a genuine show of strength. Notably, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová, affirmed that diplomatic missions would remain in Kyiv, stating, "We are not going anywhere!".

The EU has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine, with officials emphasizing the need to simultaneously increase pressure on Russia and boost assistance to Ukraine. This escalation of threats comes amidst the ongoing conflict, which began in 2014 and intensified with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, resulting in extensive casualties and Russia occupying approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory as of May 2026.
