Zelensky demands US missiles, Ukraine offers Black Sea deal as war intensifies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made an urgent plea to the United States for additional Patriot interceptor missiles, stating that Ukraine currently possesses only one percent of the US stockpile. Zelensky emphasized that acquiring five percent of the US stock could enable Ukraine to withstand intense Russian ballistic missile attacks through the upcoming winter, while ten percent could neutralize all Russian ballistic threats. This appeal comes amid a significant increase in Russian missile strikes, which have made July the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022, and a global shortage of Patriot missiles partly due to other conflicts.

Concurrently, Kyiv has extended an offer to Russia, proposing a mutual halt to attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea. This deal, reportedly conveyed through a third party, aims to restore vital shipping lanes for grain and other essential goods. Ukraine's initiative follows its own successful drone campaign against Russian commercial shipping, which had led to a sharp decline in Russian exports, while Russia's counter-attacks on Ukrainian ports have severely hampered Ukraine's agricultural exports, with an estimated 76% year-on-year drop in August. Moscow has not yet publicly responded to Kyiv's proposal.
