US Navy Sailors Face Strain as Deployments Stretch Longer

Sailors aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, are reportedly experiencing significant strain due to deployments that have stretched considerably beyond typical durations. The USS Abraham Lincoln has been at sea for over 250 days, operating continuously in a high-risk combat zone in the Middle East since February 2026, with its mission extended twice past its initial seven-month expectation. This prolonged deployment, which included a record 208 continuous days at sea without a port visit, is linked to ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran.

The extended time at sea has severely impacted crew well-being, with reports indicating deteriorating morale and mental health concerns, including multiple reported attempts by sailors to jump overboard. Additionally, sailors have allegedly faced challenging living conditions, such as mold, food and water shortages, plumbing issues, and a lack of basic hygiene supplies. While the Navy acknowledges the strain on service members and their families, it maintains the crew's resilience and states that mental health professionals are available.

Concerns over these conditions have prompted Democratic lawmakers and military health experts to call for answers from the Pentagon, emphasizing the psychological toll of uncertainty regarding deployment end dates. These extended deployments are also impacting long-term ship maintenance and the Navy's overall operational readiness, mirroring previous lengthy deployments like that of the USS Gerald R. Ford. The USS George Washington is reportedly being prepared to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln in the region.
