US announces 'economic D-Day' sanctions on Iran, vows to cut all revenue sources

The United States has launched what it describes as an "economic D-Day" against Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announcing sweeping new sanctions on August 24, 2026. This initiative, part of the Trump administration's "Operation Economic Outcast," aims to achieve "total financial isolation" by severing all financial ties and blocking revenue sources for Iran. The measures include expanding secondary sanctions to target countries and entities transacting with Tehran, alongside new restrictions across sectors such as digital assets, gold, aviation, technology, and shipping.

The U.S. is actively seeking a global coalition, issuing a stern warning to nations and foreign actors that any continued engagement with Iran's economy will lead to "tremendous economic consequences." Treasury Secretary Bessent emphasized that entities facilitating money laundering for Iran will be removed from the U.S. dollar system, though some countries will be granted a grace period to discontinue their dealings with the Islamic Republic.

In response, Iran has vehemently vowed retaliation and maintains that it will not be isolated by these new pressures. The announcement comes as Iran's currency, the rial, has already plummeted to a record low. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has publicly dismissed the U.S. narrative, while Mohsen Rezaei of Iran's national security council has threatened to halt oil exports through the Persian Gulf if the "economic war" continues, warning that participation in the U.S. campaign would be considered an "act of war."
