US Businesses Face 'Crisis Bigger Than Covid' Amid Disruptions and Price Instability

American businesses are currently grappling with significant disruptions and price instability that many executives are describing as a crisis even more challenging than the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. This severe situation is fueled by unprecedented supply chain issues, including doubled diesel prices since March and a 15% contraction in global shipping capacity, exacerbated by geopolitical events such as the Iran war, Russia's diesel export ban, Houthi rebel attacks, and extreme weather. These factors are leading to widespread shipping blockages, container shortages, and increased transportation expenses.

Beyond logistics, businesses face intense inflationary pressures, with the May 2026 Consumer Price Index hitting 4.2% year-over-year. Energy, food, and commercial rents have seen substantial increases, eroding already thin profit margins for companies, particularly small businesses. Tariffs and ongoing labor shortages, combined with rising wages and benefits, further compound operational costs.
