US economic growth slows as midterm polls favor Democrats

The U.S. economy experienced a notable slowdown in its second-quarter growth, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increasing at an annual rate of 1.5 percent, according to an advance estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on July 30, 2026. This figure marks a deceleration from the 2.1 percent growth recorded in the first quarter of the year and fell below many economists' expectations. The moderation in growth was primarily attributed to a downturn in government spending and slower increases in investment and exports, though consumer spending saw an acceleration.

Concurrently, new polling data ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections indicates a favorable environment for Democrats. A Pew survey from late July revealed Democrats holding a modest 6-point lead over Republicans in the generic congressional ballot among registered voters, with 43 percent favoring a Democratic candidate compared to 37 percent for a Republican. Other polls also showed similar trends, with an Emerson College survey giving Democrats an 11-point advantage and a CNN poll by SSRS reporting an 8-point lead on the generic ballot. Democrats also appear to have an edge in voter enthusiasm.

Despite the economic slowdown, the economy remains a paramount concern for voters as the midterms approach. While the overall economic climate and inflation continue to weigh heavily on the electorate, public trust in either party's ability to manage the economy is nearly evenly split, a shift from previous trends where Republicans often held a clear advantage on this issue.
