Dozens of remains found improperly stored and decomposing in 'deplorable conditions' at Chicago funeral home

Authorities are investigating a Chicago funeral home after discovering more than 50 bodies improperly stored and in advanced states of decomposition. The remains were found at the South Chicago Chapel on Thursday, August 6, 2026, following a complaint about improper storage and a foul odor reported by neighbors. Investigators noted "deplorable conditions," including bodies kept in an unrefrigerated area, as well as rodent and maggot infestations.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has suspended the license of funeral director Johanna Morgan, who operates the South Chicago Chapel with Clark Morgan. This incident marks a repeated offense for the couple, who previously ran Heights Crematory, which had its license revoked last year due to similar issues of mishandled and improperly stored remains.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is now undertaking the challenging task of assessing the remains, identifying the deceased, and locating necessary documentation to facilitate proper disposition and family notifications. While no arrests have been made, Chicago police detectives are conducting an ongoing investigation into the matter.
