US House Speaker Johnson pushes plan to fund Iran war, promote Trump’s ‘SAVE America Act’

In a recent development, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has successfully advanced a $95 billion budget resolution through the House of Representatives, largely along party lines with a 216-214 vote. This legislative push aims to allocate substantial funding for an escalating conflict with Iran and to promote key components of former President Donald Trump's "SAVE America Act." The resolution now paves the way for a reconciliation bill, which could bypass the Senate's filibuster rule, though its ultimate passage remains uncertain.

A significant portion of the proposed $95 billion package is designated for the ongoing conflict with Iran, with estimates suggesting up to $73 billion for military operations. This comes as the Trump administration reportedly sought around $88 billion in supplemental funding for the war, which has recently intensified with daily exchanges of strikes. Additionally, the package includes $12 billion in aid for farmers affected by global disruptions from the conflict and past tariffs.

The budget resolution also seeks to incorporate provisions from the "SAVE America Act," a bill championed by Donald Trump. This act, formally known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, proposes stricter voting requirements, including mandatory documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and valid government-issued photo identification for casting ballots. Republicans are attempting to enact these measures through budget reconciliation, having attached related provisions to other legislation, despite previous Senate resistance and procedural challenges.
