US Records Over 4,400 Measles Cases as Outbreak Continues to Grow

The United States is currently grappling with a substantial measles outbreak, with confirmed cases reaching 4,410 as of October 16, 2026. This figure marks a significant increase of 330 cases in just one week and represents the highest annual total reported since 1991. The vast majority, 96%, of these infections are associated with ongoing outbreaks within the country, with very few linked to international travel.

Pennsylvania is at the forefront of this resurgence, having reported 1,222 cases across 42 counties and confirming five measles-associated deaths, with a sixth death under investigation. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has dispatched an investigator to the state, and local health officials have intensified vaccination efforts, administering over 5,900 MMR vaccine doses at various pop-up clinics.

The re-emergence of measles, which was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, is largely attributed to a decline in national vaccination rates below the critical 95% threshold required for herd immunity. This year's cases show that children and teenagers aged 5 to 19 account for 42% of infections, adults 20 and older for 41%, and children under five for 17%. Nationwide, 451 people have been hospitalized due to measles this year.
