Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, a blow to AIPAC

Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, narrowly defeating establishment-backed Representative Haley Stevens in the primary election held on August 4, 2026. This victory marks a significant moment for the Democratic Party's progressive wing, demonstrating a shift in voter sentiment in the battleground state. El-Sayed campaigned on a platform advocating for "Medicare for All," campaign finance reform, and an end to military aid to Israel, earning endorsements from prominent progressive figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The contentious primary was characterized by substantial outside spending, with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated super PAC, the United Democracy Project, investing over $10 million in support of Stevens and against El-Sayed.
